Operating Model Railroad Display

Experience a taste of history in miniature and the pure fun of toy trains. Located on the second floor of the Lake Store, the Model Railroad Display is an O-gauge layout that follows the original track plans of the Washington and Old Dominion railroad from Purcellville to Round Hill to Bluemont. Models of electric, diesel and steam engines, trolley cars and rolling stock bring the W&OD back to life, in miniature. Models represent some of the actual equipment that once traveled the rails from Alexandria to Bluemont in the early 20th century. Many older models on the layout were actually manufactured during the era that the W&OD was still operating

The display features over 50 years of model railroad cars, steam engines and operating accessories from the 50's, 60's bringing back memories of the toy steam and diesel trains of our fathers and grandfathers. Operate a coal loader, load logs and barrels; unload the milk car, add water to a tender and stack lumber on Lionel and American Flyer operating accessories.

The late Phil Van Doren of Hillsboro, local W&OD historian, built models of prominent local landmarks which are displayed on a 50 year old operating HO layout. See if you can recognize the unique structures still standing in Bluemont, Purcellville and Round Hill.

The Train guys have added Thomas® trains for the little folks who want to express their own imagination. A collection of track and trains are waiting for you to build your own layout.

The brothers Andy and Mark Zalewski are on hand to discuss big trains, toy trains and how to fix those great toys that are stuffed away waiting to be operating like all of the trains and accessories here at the Bluemont Fair.
