First Place Juried Crafts Winner — 2005
Golden Spring Forge and Brooms & Baskets
In 2005, our first place winner was the shared booth of the Cornell's Golden Spring Forge and Brooms and Baskets businesses. From their country home at the base of the Catoctin Mountains in Frederick County, Maryland, Don and Joan Cornell work individually and collaboratively, crafting unique handmade ironwork, brooms, and baskets.
A lifelong interest in traditional arts has led Don Cornell to pursue the art of blacksmithing for more than a decade. Focusing his studies on traditional methods of craftsmanship, Don uses anvil, hammer, and fire to forge works of art that ring of days gone by. Mastery of age old forging and joinery methods allows him to create beautiful works that are both decorative and functional.
Don's works are characterized by their quality and precision. Rhythmic hammer-blows, careful twists, smooth scrolls, and traditional finishes result in beautiful pieces both traditional and contemporary. Custom creations from Golden Spring Forge compliment homes in many states and several historic sites.
Don takes his sense of pride and concern for quality craftsmanship with him when he leaves Golden Spring Forge to promote the art of blacksmithing. Providing educational services to children and adults, Don can often be found demonstrating the art at several national parks, local museums, schools, and community events.
An award-winning quilter, Joan Cornell has always been a lover of functional art. She expanded her artistic endeavors and began creating heirloom quality brooms and baskets several years ago.
Inspired to make brooms to complete the fireplace sets forged by her blacksmith husband, Joan took a course in broom-making using traditional hand-tying methods. She then transferred her knowledge to the creation of brooms for many other uses, as well. A series of basket weaving classes motivated Joan to pursue the art of basket weaving with equal passion.
Joan takes pride in making a variety of brooms and baskets that are attractive, collectible, and totally functional. Many items are original designs and custom items can be made upon request.
Recently, Don and Joan have done several arts and craft shows together, displaying the complimentary diversity of their respective work. They greatly enjoyed the organization, atmosphere, and the many attendees of the Bluemont Fair. They both look forward to future events in this unique and inspiring community.
