First Place Juried Crafts Winner — 2007
Kathryn Learn, Potter
I saw my first potter when I was a child. We were on vacation in the north Georgia Mountains and heard about a place where you could watch the potter in action. I was mesmerized!
Many years later (in college), I had the opportunity to take a class in wheel thrown ceramics. While I was not an art major, I took almost all of my electives in the field of art. Looking back now, I regret not getting a double major.
I graduated from LaGrange College (Georgia) in 1984. I left behind pottery, never thinking of pursuing it in the future. However, it didn't forget me! In 1989, I was given the opportunity to join a co-op of potters on St. Simons Island, GA. I only had the one class of wheel throwing under my belt. However, I spent an entire summer teaching myself to throw and to do so consistently. At the time, it was a hobby, a release from the stress of my teaching job.
When I married an Air Force officer, I knew teaching would mean re-certifying every time we moved. My husband (who is also a stained glass artist), encouraged me to pursue pottery full time. It was the best decision I've ever made!
I enjoy making pottery that people will USE. If they choose to display it as well, wonderful. However, I want to make pots that become old friends to the family…. A utensil that graces the everyday life and brings joy to the user. I take my craft seriously and hope it is reflected in my work.
