First Place Juried Crafts Winner — 2011

George Carrigan, Wood Turner

Susie George Carrigan is a self taught wood turner that has been displaying his wood turnings at the Bluemont Fair for the past seven years. Woodturning started for him when his wife wanted some control over the TV remote control and thought a lathe would make a nice Christmas present. Nowadays it's hard to get him to come in from the workshop for dinner.

George says "Woodturning is addictive. Every piece of wood is different, even if they come from the same tree there are subtle differences that Mother Nature has seen fit to leave there for me to find. With thousands of woods available I'll never get bored turning wood. I've tried to take my woodturning beyond just the wood by combining the most pleasing forms that complement both the wood and the form. My goal is that everyone that leaves with a piece of my wood turned art will carry with them a family heirloom to be cherished for generations. I'm often asked what my favorite wood is and the answer is simple. What ever piece of wood I have on the lathe right now.
